With Ubuntu 12.04, HP LaserJet M1132 MFP Printer/Scanner almost works out of the box – the device is detected correctly but HP-setup must be run to enable printing/scanning. Here is what you gotta do:
(if you are looking for a guide on how to use the built-in scanner, then I have also made a guide for that here: LINK)
INSTALLATION:
1. Make sure that the HP LaserJet M1132 MFP is connected to the computer and power is turned on!
2. Open a terminal (pro-tip: press CTRL+ALT+T)
3. Run the following command in the terminal (pro-tip: paste the code into the terminal using CTRL+ALT+V, once you have copied the code from this website):
sudo hp-setup -i
4. Go through the setup process…
5. At some point, the program wants to download a proprietary binary file (hp-plugin) and that can take a couple of minutes to start downloading – be patient, it will start!
6. Once the setup has finished, printing should work without any problems…
Please write a comment if the guide works for you or if something does not work π
Hello,
The above given procedure worked for me with Ultimate Edition 3.4 (Ubuntu 12.04) and HP Laserjet M1212nf MFP printer at first.
Thanks and respects
Thank you very much for this HowTo! It worked like a charm.
HP somehow thinks you are root already this is probably why the installation through the GUI does not work.
Ubuntu 12.4 – LJ M1132MFP
it doesn’t work for me. after typing “sudo hp-setup -i ” i get :

then no mather what i type (0 or 1 or 2) it replies:
“Using connection type: usb

What shall I do next?
If error “No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality”
try to delete automaticaly detected printer first (Right upper conner “gear” > Printers),
then type in terminal “sudo hp-setup -i”.
Printer & scanner should work fine now for you, but not scanner for other users.
If so try in terminal “sudo adduser someUserLogin scanner”
(reverse action is “sudo deluser someUserLogin scanner”)
You can check adduser results with “groups someUserLogin”.
Thanks a lot for the useful hints, good karma to you!

what should i do? what’s wrong?
the device is busy, have you tried to turn it off and on again – sorry for this stupid hint if you have already tried that…
Otherwise it could be that hplip is broken in your linux distribution – try to download hplip manually from hplip.sourceforge.net and install it π
Works fine! Thanks.
Thanks a lot! π
really thanks!
how to do this in linux mint 13? the utility hp-setup is there, but following the steps yield :
error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality.
I don’t really know much about Linux Mint – you could perhaps try to download hplip manually from hplip.sourceforge.net and install it π
Thanks a lot!!
It works fine, Thanks

Hi,
I can’t get my M1132 MPF working over the network through wifi. After running hpconfig I get an error message:
error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality
Im running ubuntntu 12.04 on a Inspiron 600m, the printer ir wired attached to a powerbook g4 15′ with OSX 10.5.8. Im trying to print wirelessly on the dell Inspiron 600m, on a local LAN.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Armando,
Sorry for the late reply – wedding preparations are stealing my precious time π Unfortunately my old M1132 MFP printer does not support wireless network, so I cannot test that. Does your printer work if you connect it with USB and follow my guide? Downloading the HP lib manually might be neccessary: hplip.sourceforge.net
Worked brilliantly on Linux Mint 12. Many thanks.
Yes it works, thank you! (I had to delete the automatically detected printer first, then it was ok) π
I used the command sudo hp-setup -i in my new Ubuntu 13.10 beta 1 amd64.
Works perfectly.
Only advice is to delete the printer if it is already installed by ubuntu, otherwise it won’t work.
agradesco make your contribution as debian 7 testing, I could not run the printer with what you achieve, thanks and jah jah blessings for you
Hi there,
thanks a lot for the tips. Unfortunately, I am unable to make it work. I followed your instructions and the last message I got was:

Do you have any tip that can help me?
Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Thank you very much. This worked!!!!!!
Thanks. Ubuntu 13.10 / 64bit did recognize the HP Laserjet 1022 (USB / connected by one hub) but the printing was not executed. I used the “hp-setup -i” and followed the instructions for setting.
Thanks!
– sudo hp-setup
Had to try the USB in a different port.
Thanks a ton π
Setup for this printer require the spetiol thics/ As example PPD file which I must understand for setup.
A have no time for stading the HP poduct setup features. But standard procedure does not woork too.
Now i miss a lot of time for this device setup. And itt was a bad choise for mi in any case.
Thaaaanks!!

See my other guide: http://www.andersaaberg.dk/2012/scanning-with-hp-laserjet-m1132-mfp-for-ubuntu-12-04/
Thank you for your post, was great!!!
Many thanks – I’m glad that I could help π
thanx
It is still working – on Xubuntu 16.04 π Thank you!
Hi pls help . I have done the said process, after i pasted the code, its asking for a password.. it goes like this
[sudu] password for www:
what should i do?
Sorry for crazy late reply π You need to enter the password for your user – it is probably the one that you had to enter when you installed the operating system.
Many Thanks it works. But I had to use the following steps:
1. After the SUDO Command, HP provides CLI installion options…
2. Just use “hp-setup -u” > The HP setup is starting a GUI
3. Download the plugin and install the printer
That’s it π
I was suggested this blog through my cousin. I’m now not positive whether or not this post is written by means of him as nobody
else recognise such particular about my problem.
You’re amazing! Thank you!
Many thanks.
The printer Laserjet M1132MFP HP works well after reading through your Golden Guidance. So lucky.
Works also with Ubuntu 18.04! Thanks π
